Recovering Notes from Firefox’s QuickFox Extension After Upgrading Firefox

If you’re here, you’re probably wondering how to access your notes in QuickFox since the extension is disabled in newer versions of Firefox, thus preventing access to your notes. You’ve come to the right place. You should be able to access them in less than three minutes from now.

Background

In the olden days before the big upheavel with Firefox Quantum, there was a great note-taking app called QuickFox. But, long after the big changes in Firefox, this app hasn’t been updated. Luckily, the app takes local backups and stores them in plaintext for easy retrieval.

Solution

I stumbled upon this post. But you have to go between a few tabs to figure out where to go/what to do. Below is all you need, but in one place.

If you’re on Linux, you should find some folders containing your notes here (where USERNAME and GIBBERISH are unique to you): /home/USERNAME/.mozilla/firefox/GIBBERISH.backup/qfn-backups/ If you’re on Windows, or those files aren’t there, put about:support into Firefox’s address bar. On that page, near the top, under Application Basics > Profile Directory, you’ll see the path where your local profile is stored. The qfn-backups folder is what should contain your notes.
